THE MIAMI MODEL
Against
the prescribed template of paramilitary oppression, information
warfare, and profit above all values, activists converge in Miami to
demonstrate grassroots resistance, creative action, and international
solidarity—a clash between competing visions of globalization,
soon to be known as the Miami Model. Indymedia activists shot hundreds
of hours documenting the 2003 FTAA protests in Miami and shaped it into
a documentary that cuts through the mass media blackout to reveal the
brutal repression and assault on civil liberties that took place, as
well as the inspiring alternatives to capitalist globalization that
were also in full effect in Miami
THE MIAMI MODEL is a powerful story set in what few will recognize as
the United States. Paramilitaries, embedded journalists and
illegal protests. Think this is Iraq or Afghanistan? It's your country. (2004, 91 mins.)
Cafe Bohemia, 937 Central Ave. St. Petersburg.
Films are shown in the outdoor courtyard, so if weather is an issue please check back here beforehand. |

THE JENA 6
In
a small town in Louisiana, six families are fighting for their sons
lives. Two nooses are left as a warning to black students trying to
integrate their playground, fights break out across town, a white man
pulls a shotgun on black students, someone burns down most of the
school, the DA puts six black students on trial for attempted murder,
and the quiet town of Jena becomes the site of the largest civil rights
demonstration in the South since the 1960s. THE JENA 6 is the story of
hidden racial inequality and violence becoming visible. It is a
powerful symbol for, and example of, how racial justice works in
America where the lynching noose has been replaced by the DA's pen. (2008, 28 mins.)
AMERICANS ON HOLD: PROFILING, PREJUDICE, AND NATIONAL SECURITY
Americans
on Hold: Profiling, Prejudice, and National Security is a timely and
powerful documentary film that exposes the U.S. government’s use
of discriminatory profiling in the name of national security, and its
impact on South Asian, Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim community
members. Produced by the Center for Human Rights and Global
Justice (CHRGJ) at New York University School of Law, AMERICANS ON HOLD
reveals the harmful effects of prejudicial and ineffective U.S.
counter-terrorism and immigration policies. (2010, 30 mins.)
