The
following pictures are from the July 24th protest in front
of
Baywalk. This protest was in response
to the initiative proposed by Baywalk and the city of St Petersburg to
establish “no protest zones” in front of Baywalk and at Tropicana Field. This initiative goes against the principles
of the first amendment guaranteeing all Americans freedom of speech and
freedom
of assembly. A press conference was
called by The Uhuru Movement inside of Baywalk, but once the speakers
began,
Baywalk officials motioned to the DJ playing on the second level to
increase
the volume so that the press conference could not be heard. |
The St Petersburg police department then
threatened everyone with arrest if they did not leave the courtyard. The protesters left and had an impromptu
press conference outside of Baywalk using a blow horn.
Uhuru President Chimurenga Waller, AIM Executive Director Sheridan Murphy, Sojourner Truth Center leader
Winnie
Foster,
and St Pete for Peace representative Chris Ernesto all spoke to the
passionate
crowd
of about 100 individuals. Protesters
lined the sidewalk following the press conference.
Special thanks goes to Mark Kamleiter of the
Green Party of Pinellas County
for his leadership
and legal support in working to overturn this initiative |
