“Remember,
remember the fifth of November” was the theme of Saturday
evening’s protest at Baywalk and if you’ve not seen
“V for Vendetta”, the sight of masked protesters (a.k.a.
enemy combatants for peace) wearing long, black capes might have been a
little confusing. There was ample proof, however, that the film’s
message struck a chord with those who are sick and tired of the
insanity emanating from Washington even among those who may have
missed the movie itself.
And if the
results of our straw poll was any indication, there are a lot of
politicians who should find November a very memorable month indeed
although the 7th of the month, rather than the 5th, will be the
day they are remembering.
Over one
hundred people participated in “The People’s
Election”, where Baywalk patrons were asked for their opinion on
everything from the War in Iraq to Domestic Surveillance, and check out
these results:
Should the U.S. withdraw from Iraq?
Yes, immediately: 79%
Yes, within 1 yr: 16%
No, stay indefinitely: 5%
Should President Bush be impeached?
Yes: 86%
No: 14%
Is it O.K. to torture?
Yes: 3%
In certain cases: 14%
Never: 83%
Is it O.K. to spy on U.S. citizens?
Yes: 2%
In certain cases: 20%
Never: 78%
Should the U.S. attack Iran?
Yes: 11%
Only if they attack us first: 22%
No: 67%
Should all incumbents be thrown out of office?
Yes: 57%
No: 43%
These are
questions and issues that the American people should obviously be
allowed to vote on directly since our answers show that our so-called
“representatives” aren’t really representing us very
well these days. On the other hand, they appear to represent themselves
and their corporate interests a whole lot better. Isn’t it time
for a change?
