Hundreds
of peace loving patriots gathered at the beautiful waterside park in
Melbourne and marched around downtown, chanting "If they won't give us
peace we'll take it to the street".
Response from passing cars and pedestrians was
decidedly positive, with only four counter-protesters: a couple
of fundamentalist anti-choice advocates at the park, and a couple of
misguided guys holding "Give War A Chance" signs along the parade
route. One of them contended he was a marine veteran, but when
veteran Ron asked him what battalion he was with, and a couple of very
simple questions that any Marine could answer, he was not forthcoming,
so unless we hear otherwise, we'll consider him a fraud. The march ended with us gathering at City Hall to listen to a few speeches from local organizers and travelers.
The rain came, but our spirits weren't dampened, as
cars streamed by and honked their approval, and new friends and allies
were made.
Our police escort was generally surly, but not physically aggressive, so all in all a very positive day for peace.
