MLK Parade in St. Petersburg, FL
Jan. 16, 2006
About 50 members
from a coalition of local peace and community groups including St. Pete
Food Not Bombs, Tampa Bay Veterans for Peace, Pax Christi Tampa Bay and
The Refuge
joined St. Pete for Peace on Monday,
Jan. 16th as we marched in St. Petersburg's Martin Luther King
parade. Young demonstrators, some only 4 years old, united with
older, seasoned activists to express their appreciation of Dr. King's
life and work, and to keep his message of peace and equality alive.
Marchers
chanted and flashed peace signs to the crowd as one speaker
read the words of Dr. King's "Beyond Vietnam" speech. Rev. Bruce
Wright reminded parade viewers of Dr. King's admonition that "Injustice
anywhere is injustice everywhere." Parade goers received our
message enthusiastically, warmly embracing Dr. King's words of peace,
eagerly taking fliers and joining in the chants. The day was a
chance to reaffirm our
commitment to creating peace in our world and to improving our
community by standing together to speak up for the common human values
Dr. King so eloquently defined and for which he so courageously acted
upon.
Once again
our thanks go to everyone who marched with us and helped to
organize our participation in the parade. And most of all we
offer our thanks to Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. with a heartfelt farewell to another hero of nonviolent
resistance, Ms. Rosa Parks.
