I-275 Overpass at 54th Avenue N, St.
Petersburg, FL
Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005
An estimated
10,000 cars saw our banners on Wednesday from 5:30-7:00pm.
Unfortunately, seven
law enforcement vehicles arrived to tell us if we didn't detach our
banners there would be arrests. Even after our banners were
removed as ordered, the
police
stayed around for at least 30 minutes while we held our banners.
One of the officers was particularly aggressive and continued to
threaten arrests even after the banners were detached. At a time
when people are suffering in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama due to
Hurricane Katrina and the inefficiency of our government, it seemed
particularly offensive that law
enforcement officials would spend so much time harassing people for
something so trivial.
