Was this a protest of the Tampa Bay Times?
No, this was a rally to encourage the media to speak out on behalf of whistleblowers and the Constitution, and to reject the false choice of privacy vs. security. We believe the content of what Edward Snowden exposed, namely that the NSA has been spying on Americans, deserves the media's full attention.  The rally was also to show solidarity with Edward Snowden (and all whistleblowers like WikiLeaks and Bradley Manning) and to applaud Venezuela, Nicaragua and Bolivia for offering Snowden asylum.

MORE REASONS FOR THE RALLY

Evo Morales rocks!

After after his presidential jet was held up in Europe under suspicions that Edward Snowden had hitched a ride, Morales said, "message to the Americans: The empire and its servants will never be able to intimidate or scare us... European countries need to liberate themselves from the imperialism of the Americans."

Snail mail spying
In addition to the NSA spying on email and phone calls, it was revealed last week that the U.S. Postal Service is logging all mail for law enforcement.

NSA spying on Europeans & Brazilians, too
The NSA allegedly bugged European Union diplomatic offices in Washington and New York and monitored phone lines in Brussels, and NSA statistics indicate that the agency stores data from around half a billion communications connections in Germany each month. This data includes telephone calls, emails, mobile-phone text messages and chat transcripts. It was also revealed that the NSA has been indiscriminately collecting the communications of millions of Brazilian citizens.

Flunkies of the U.S.
These countries have either declined asylum to Snowden or have said he must be within their borders to be considered for asylum: Austria, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany (whose Chancellor Angela Merkel said that surveillance is essential for democracy), Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Spain.

Director of National Intelligence lied to Congress
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper has apologized for telling Congress earlier this year that the National Security Agency does not collect data on millions of Americans, a response he now says was “clearly erroneous.” (Isn't lying to Congress a crime?)
