BACKGROUND
Protesters
have toppled Tunisia's dictatorship. The Tunisian revolution,
partially fueled by repression, food price inflation and unemployment,
was spurred-on by WikiLeaks, Facebook and Twitter and a frustrated
young man who set himself on fire. Read More
The revolution, the first of its kind in a generation, ousted a
U.S. ally, and has sparked protests throughout the Arab world.
TUNISIA AT A GLANCE
Location:
North Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between Algeria and
Libya, across the Mediterranean Sea from Italy and Malta.
Geographically diverse, Mediterranean climate.
Area: Slightly larger than the U.S. state of Georgia.
Population:
10.6 million. Arab 98%, European 1%, Jewish and other 1%. Women's
rights in Tunisia are among the most advanced in the Arab world.
Economy:
Tunisia has a diverse economy, with important agricultural, mining,
tourism, and manufacturing sectors. Unemployment 9.4% (2009).
Government:
The Tunisian Republic gained independence from France in 1956. Ousted
President Zine el Abidine BEN ALI, an ally of the U.S. was ousted Jan.
2011. Prime Minister Mohamed GHANNOUCHI now in power. Secular country
but human rights groups say the authorities tolerate no dissent,
harassing government critics and rights activists.
