Letter to Hillary Clinton
following our February, 2006 protest
of her appearance at a Florida Democratic Party fundraiser in Tampa.
Sen. Clinton,
This letter
comes to you on behalf of the members of St. Pete for Peace. We
are the peace group who led
the
demonstration against you last Saturday in front of the Wyndham
Westshore Hotel in Tampa, FL.
Our group is
made up of independent Floridians, along with some Democrats and even
Republicans, who demand an end to the U.S. military and corporate
occupation of Iraq, who call for the end of U.S. threats against
countries like Iran and Syria who do not pose a threat to us, and who
seek to make peace the founding principle of our foreign policy.
We organized
the protest to let you, and our community, know that we stand against
your 2002 vote
for war against
Iraq and your continued support of the occupation.
Other reasons
for our protest include:
·Your
position against demanding an immediate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq.
·Your
call for an increase in the size of the Army by 80,000 during a time of
war and steadily falling
enlistment
rates.
·Your
threats to sanction Iran and punish Syria, two countries that have
caused us no harm.
Additionally,
we object to your support of the PATRIOT ACT, your disdain for civil
liberties including your
proposal
against flag burning, and the compromises you have made on domestic
health and education policies as you cozy up to extreme right-wing
ideologues like Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay.
(To find out
more on why we oppose your platform, please visit: http://stpeteforpeace.org/hillary.html)
You should be
comforted to know that we have done more than our share of protesting
against Bush and his
corporate
cronies. However, you should also be aware that we see no
difference between the president and
politicians of
any party who support his imperial crusades and who refuse to call for
an end to war. We
firmly take the
stand that we will not vote for any candidate, regardless of party
affiliation who votes
for war and who
does not demand an end to the occupation in Iraq.
We welcome your
reply and would be willing to engage in a discussion with you about
your policies on war
and civil
liberties.
Sincerely,
The members of
St. Pete for Peace.
