RECAP
About sixty activists gathered in front of the Burger King on 34th
Street South in St. Petersburg, FL to take part in a spirited march in
support of the CIW Fair Food Campaign. The Coalition of
Immokalee Workers have launched a Florida tour to raise awareness and
gain support for their battle against Burger King for fair working
conditions and a raise in pay. St. Pete for Peace, the Student
Farmworkers Alliance, the Socialist Party of Tampa Bay, and other student, civic, and faith allies joined
together to drive the message to the masses. Support was found in
the street as passersby allowed their horns to echo the message and the
vibe was resoundingly positive. The media was out in force as
well, as a WMNF reporter recorded the actions. After the march,
there was a brief, yet highly motivating, speech by CIW leaders about
their goals with this campaign.
The group reconvened at Cafe Bohemia on Central
Avenue to view a film about the CIW's history with past campaigns
against Taco Bell and McDonalds and their goals for the campaign
against Burger King. The film also depicted accounts of CIW
members and their view of the work they provide to Americans and what
they are hoping for in their future. After the film, another
spirited speech was given, and CIW leaders asked of all the present
allies to join them for the upcoming nine mile march on Burger King on
November 30, 2007 in Miami, FL.
